The free-roll tournament is another popular type of poker tournament. They are popular because they charge no entry fee, but still pay-out real money prizes.
Free-roll tournaments often draw huge numbers of players and are multi-table poker events. There are different requirements for entry into a free-roll tournament depending on the poker room hosting the event. Free-roll tournaments began in an attempt for a poker room to attract new players to the room and open an account. The conditions were non-existent, with no deposit requirements or requirements to play raked hands. The players just opened an account and started playing.
Poker rooms are known to sometimes use free-roll tournaments to reward their regular players who spend a lot of time at real money tables. A poker room simply puts up prize money and invites only those players they wish to reward.
Some poker rooms use free-rolls to welcome new players, only new real money players are invited to the free roll tables. These poker rooms are use free-rolls to entice people to the room. New players are required to do little more than to have an unfunded real money account into which any free-roll winnings the player may win can be deposited.
