Re-buys and Add-ons
Some, although not all, tournaments offer players the right to re-buys. A Re-buy tournament allows the players to purchase more chips while at the tournament table. The re-buy tournament may allow unlimited numbers of re-buys and conditions may be attached to the re-buys. Each tournament is different and may have say: a rule allowing only a single re-buy, a rule where re-buys are allowed only when a player has less than one thousand chips, or a rule that allows unlimited re-buys only during the first hour of play. If you are unsure of the rules look on the poker rooms' website or call their customer support.
Some poker tournaments allow add-ons. An add-on is the right to purchase more poker chips while at the table. Example: a tournament may allow a single add-on to all players (regardless of the quantity of chips they hold) at the end of the add-on period. Even the player with the most chips can add on to his stack by purchasing more chips at that time. The quantity of chips you can purchase as an add-on is fixed as well as the price paid. This is done to prevent a player from buying more tournament chips than everyone started with (for example purchasing 10,000 chips where everyone started with 800 chips).
The use of Add-ons and/or re-buys can extend the playing time of a player in a tournament that allows them. The length of the tournament itself may be increased when they are allowed.
