Satellite Tournaments

A poker tournament raises its prize money from the players, through the payment of an entry fee. Those tournaments able to pay-out the largest prizes therefore tend to have the largest entry fees. These larger fees put these larger paying tournaments out of the reach of many players of more modest means. As an example, the World Series of Poker gives out millions of dollars in prize money however the entry fee for a seat is $10,000. To help players get a chance to play in these big money tournaments poker rooms often hold satellite tournaments where the prize is a seat in a larger tournament. The entry fee for these tournaments is more modest, for example; a ten player tournament with a $1,000 buy-in and the winner getting a $10,000 seat at the World Series of Poker event, might be organized.

A great number of players play these satellite tournaments in an attempt to gain entry into a larger tournament at a low cost.

Players who might still have trouble with a $1,000 entry fee for say the above mentioned game can play a super-satellite tournament. The super-satellite tournament is just a satellite of a satellite with the winning player receiving a seat in a satellite event. Through the use of satellite and super-satellite tournaments online poker rooms in effect lower the entry fee to major events to a level where even players of modest means can hope to play. In the 2005 World Series of Poker, players have been known to qualify after paying a low entry fee of $16.
