Why Play Tournament Poker?
For a novice poker player the best thing about tournament poker is that player losses are limited to that they paid for an entry fee. Novice players who play well and/or are lucky can win money, while if they play poorly and/or are unlucky can lose only their entry fee.
This is why tournament play is a great place for new poker players to learn how to improve their playing ability. As a new player you get to play competitive poker without worrying about a major on your bankroll. You can concentrate on learning how to play better, knowing your losses are fixed (the entry fee is the most you can lose).
For many poker players the ultimate, the most glamorous and, the highest risk poker tournament are the No Limit tournaments. In these tournaments there are minimum bets, but there is no limit (except the amount of chips you have) to the maximum you can bet. No limit poker is played differently than traditional limit poker. In limited poker game a player can charge their opponent to see your cards by betting, in a no limit game a player can wager huge amounts of money making others less likely to call your bet.
In playing a high risk game like no limit Texas Hold'em, a tournament may well be the best place to play. The fixed entry price gets you a quantity of chips that you use to bet with, if you lose your chips your entire bankroll has not been lost. Losing all of your chips will however result in you having to leave the table as you will be unable to resume playing without chips. Tournament playing allows players with less money to wager a chance to play this aggressive less friendly version of poker, but not lose everything in the event things go wrong.
Tournament poker also has its fans in players who like to see who wins and who loses. A poker tournament continues until there is only one person playing, they have all the chips, and all others have been forced to leave the table. Tournament playing doesn't allow you to creep ahead (increase your winnings) and then call it a night. Players play to win it all, or at least finish high enough in the standings to win some of the tournament prize money.
Poker tournaments are extremely popular with poker players so poker rooms offer a variety of different tournaments to players.
